Why Are My Lights Flickering?

Hibu Websites • November 24, 2021

When the lights flicker in your house, it is often a sign that you have a bigger problem in your home. In most cases, you may need an electrical technician to determine the cause of the flickering. According to Blog.capterra.com, the Bureau of Labor Statistics has estimated that by 2024, there will be an increase in employed electricians in America. Currently, there are more than 625,000, and that is expected to increase to about 715,000. However, before you call one of these professionals, you can use the following list to troubleshoot the cause.

Problems With the Light Bulbs

If a light bulb is loose in the socket, it does not receive a consistent supply of power. This can cause it to flicker. This problem can be resolved by tightening the light bulb in its socket. Once you turn off the light, wait for it to cool and then gently tighten it. Your light bulb could be flickering because of the type of bulb that it is. A fluorescent light bulb flickers when the room is cold or when you have first turned on the light. If you change to a different type of light bulb, the flickering may stop. Using a LED light bulb with a non-compatible dimmer will cause it to flicker. If you need a different type of dimmer, you should contact an electrical technician.

Overloaded Circuits

Sometimes your light may flicker when you use other appliances, like the microwave. This means that when you are using multiple appliances at one time, it causes a more significant draw on your circuits. If this happens on an infrequent basis, it is not serious. However, you may want to consult an electrical technician to get this corrected.

Change in Voltage

The voltage in your house varies between 115 volts to 125 volts. If the voltage falls into a number outside of that range, it can be a problem. You should have an electrical technician check into this. In addition, you should look for signs like light bulbs and fixtures dimming at unexpected times. If the lights dim or flicker when you turn on large appliances, it could be a sign of the voltage fluctuating.

If you are concerned about the light flicking in your home, you should contact a professional electrical technician to determine the cause of the flickering.
